The 2016 NBA season was a record setting, history making season for the basketball league and ended with the Cleveland Cavaliers left standing after the dust settled. A boy from Akron, Ohio upheld his promise to the city of Cleveland to bring home a championship upon his return to his home team. But the road to victory for LeBron and the Cavs was anything but easy. Their final opponent was to be the defending champions and a rematch of the previous finals, the Golden State Warriors.
The Warriors had a phenomenal season with accomplishing a record of 73 wins and they were the heavy favorites to win a back to back championship. The Cavs did not allow the side chatter to get the best of them and focused on just playing ball. At one point during this finals series, they found themselves down three games to one and statistically, no team in NBA finals history has every come back to win it all. We’ve all just witnessed history and that statistic is no longer true.
The Cleveland Cavs came together as a team when it mattered most with a full team effort to overcome what some thought to be the impossible. Named the NBA Finals MVP, their captain and star, LeBron James showed leadership, unselfishness, and played one of the greatest games of his career to help carry the Cavaliers to their first NBA championship. It is also the first major professional championship for the city of Cleveland in 52 years, ending the championship drought and breaking the Cleveland sports curse. Congratulations to the Cleveland Cavaliers on becoming the 2016 NBA champions.
